Guru Shloka – Seven rare Sanskrit Guru shlokas (in Hindi/Sanskrit) with English meanings.
1. Kimatra bahunoktena shastra kotishtena cha
Durlabha chitta vishrantihi vinaguru kripam param |
किमत्र बहुनोक्तेन शास्त्रकोटि शतेन च।
दुर्लभा चित्त विश्रान्तिः विना गुरुकृपां परम्॥

The state of supreme calmness in ‘chitta’ is rare without a Guru.
2. Sthavaram jangamam vyaptam yat kinchit sacharacharam.
Tatpadam darshitam yena tasmai Shri Gurave Namah.
स्थावरं जंगमं व्याप्तं यत्किंचित्सचराचरम् ।
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
My Salutations to that reverential teacher, who revealed to me that which pervades
everything in this world, whether animate-inanimate, or movable-immovable.
3. Nicham shyaasanam chasya darvadaa, guru sannidhou,
Gurostu chakshur vishayo n yathestasano bhavet |
नीचं शय्यासनं चास्य सर्वदा गुरुसंनिधौ।
गुरोस्तु चक्षुर्विषये न यथेष्टासनो भवेत्॥
It is obligatory to sit on a lower aasana in the presence of Guru.
If Guru walks into the room where you are seated, organsie yourself and sit respectfully and not casually.
4. Dharmagjyon, dharmakarta cha sadaa dharmaparayanha
Tatvebhayaha sarvashastrartha deshako gurur uchyate |
धर्मज्ञो धर्मकर्ता च सदा धर्मपरायणः।
तत्त्वेभ्यः सर्वशास्त्रार्थादेशको गुरुरुच्यते॥
The one who know dharma, the one who acts according to dharma,
the one who remains in surrender of dharma, and the one who
has the knowledge of the essence of shaastra – is called a Guru

5. Guukaarastva bandhakaarastu, rukaara steja uchyate
Andhakaara nirodhtvaat Gururityabhi dhiyate |
गुकारस्त्वन्धकारस्तु रुकार स्तेज उच्यते।
अन्धकार निरोधत्वात् गुरुरित्यभिधीयते॥
Gu means andhakaar, and ‘ru’ means light ( the light of buddhi/knowledge)
The one who takes us from darkness towards the light of knowledge is a Guru.
6. Prerakaha suchakaha schaiva, vachako darshka statha
Sikshako bodhakash chaiva, sadete Guruvaha smritaaha |
प्रेरकः सूचकश्वैव वाचको दर्शकस्तथा।
शिक्षको बोधकश्चैव षडेते गुरवः स्मृताः॥
The one who inspires us, the one who enlightens us with knowledge,
the one who reveals the truth to us, the one who show us the path,
the one who teaches us, and the one who helps realise our inner energies/talent –
all those who help us do these are equal to our Guru.
7. Gurur-adir-anadish-cha Guruh-param-daivatam.
Guroh-parataram nasti tasmai Shri Gurave Namah.
गुरुरादिरनादिश्च गुरुः परमदैवतम् ।
गुरोः परतरं नास्ति तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः
The Guru is the beginning of the Universe, yet he himself is without a beginning, the Guru is the highest deity, and there is none higher than the Guru. My reverential salutations at the lotus-feet of such a Gurudev.
